January 2006:

Dear Dream Truck Enthusiast:

The Dream Truck was the first the most memorable custom vehicle that has ever been built (place any Dream View.1). Its reputation is undoubtedly based upon its extensive magazine coverage that was presented between 1953 and 1958 (and during its restoration during the late 1970s) in more than 140 magazine articles that chronicled its conversion from a stock '50 /'54 Chevy pickup to a radical – but practical – custom. There is also something magical about its terrifying crash in 1958 and later resurrection after disappearing for nearly 20 years.

The Dream Truck Project, which includes the creation of a book and a scale model project, began when modeler Bob Barnett started construction of a scale replica of the Dream Truck in 1993. After his untimely death in 1994, a group of modelers from across the United States decided to complete the model. The group involved in the scale Dream Truck project began with Mark S. Gustavson, Don Holthaus (owner of The Modelhaus –), and Bill Aitchison, a custom car historian. Other modelers of note soon joined: web master Mark J. Benton, commercial artist Bob Wick, machinist Cody Grayland, and photographer Pete Bave.

The Dream Truck Project is divided into two parts:

The Book

Five years in the making, this book exhaustively chronicles the wonderful and varied history of the Truck. With the full cooperation of the Dream Truck's original owner Spence Murray, discoverer and restorer Bruce Glascock and its current owner/restorer Kurt McCormick, a thorough and accurate historical record of photos, interviews and documentation of the Truck's history and construction has been assembled. The Saga of Spencer Murray's Dream Truck tells, for the first time, the comprehensive story of the history of the creation, near destruction, and resurrection of one of the most famous custom vehicles of all time. The book includes a Prologue by Spence Murray, and Forwards by Kurt McCormick, Bob Wick, Bill Aitchison and author Gustavson. The book is now in its Second Edition with a Third Edition being readied for release in April, 2006. Go here to order the book: The hard cover book – hand assembled and inspected – features more than 217 black and white photos, 24 color plates, 18 appendices (which include dozens of photographs) as well as a lengthy text which not only explains the history of the Truck, but also comments upon it.

The Model Kit and Detailing Kit.

Since 1998, Bill Aitchison and Mark S. Gustavson have been researching and creating the 'master' for the Dream Truck resin body kit that will be produced by The Modelhaus. Based on the original resin castings by Bob Barnett, Mark S. Gustavson has spent many hours revising and reconstruction Bob Barnett's resin masters. While starting over using the AMT '50 Chevy truck kit would have been easier, we decided that we should make whatever use of the Barnett masters we could to best honor Bob's pioneering work. Mark Gustavson has been doing the major work on the body parts with his work being checked and reviewed by Bill Aitchison and Mark S. Gustavson against hundreds of available photographs. When finished, the master body parts will be sent to Don Holthaus/The Modelhaus for production casting and retail sale to the public. This resin body kit will piggy back on the AMT '50 Chevy pickup truck kit, and be accompanied by a super detailing kit offered by Custom Styling Studio.

The first of such ultra-detailing parts kit will be allow a builder to create an authentic replica of the Dream Truck using the resin body kit for the Dream Truck that The Modelhaus will offer. This super detailing kit by Custom Styling Studio. will offer a set of machined, photo etched and resin cast parts to builders interested in building a super-detailed model of any of the various versions of the Dream Truck.
